Reduce Dust in Your Home with These 9 Simple Ideas

9 simple ideas to reduce dust in your home, dusting

There’s a lot we could say about dust. Like that a typical 6-room home accumulates about 40 pounds of dust per year. (Discover Magazine) And even a small amount of dust, just the weight of a dime, “is enough to create carcinogenic levels”. (Hughes Environmental)

Dust is inevitable and, unfortunately, we’ll never be able to totally get rid of it. BUT there are some ways that you can drastically reduce the amount of dust that accumulates in your home…and some don’t even include cleaning.

  1. Make sure to clean or replace furnace filters frequently. There are many factors that go into it, but a good rule of thumb is to replace air filters every other month. (Service Experts outlines several key factors that determine when you need to change the furnace filter.) Next time you buy furnace filters, consider buying ones that actually remove dust from the air.
  2. Reduce the amount of fabric you have in your home like curtains and throw pillows. They do look nice and make your home more personalized, but textiles easily attract and collect dust particles and are more difficult to clean because dust can hide in the folds.
  3. One of the dustiest places in a home are the ceiling fans. Clean them regularly so dust doesn’t have a chance to accumulate. We recommend doing it once a week and it just so happens that we’ve recently introduced the 2-in-1 Extendable Duster that will clean those fans in no time!dusting, ceiling fan dusting, 9 simple ways to reduce dust in your home
  4. When you dust a room, start at the top and work your way down so that if any dust falls, you’ll clean it up as you go on. (Hint: e-cloth’s amazing fibers collect and trap in dust until rinsed so there’s no worry about dust falling!) Work in a clockwise direction to make sure you cover the whole room.
  5. If you have hard flooring, dust your floors regularly. Might we suggest the Flexi-edge Floor & Wall Duster? This will prevent the transfer of dust and dirt from room to room and keep your floors looking their best.
  6. …And if you have carpets, vacuum frequently! Depending on the traffic in your home, that might need to be every day or every couple of days. (HGTV recommends these vacuuming tips:
    • use a vacuum that has a HEPA filter
    • replace or clean the filter regularly
    • maintain the vacuum by emptying the canister and changing bags and belts
    • remove hair and other materials that get stuck in the brush
    • consider getting it serviced to keep it working optimally
  7. Laundering your bed sheets once a week prevents an accumulations of dead skin cells…ew!
  8. Consider purchasing an air purifier, especially if someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma. (Note: In order for an air purifier to be effective, there needs to be one in each room.)
  9. The last one is a pretty simple and straight-forward idea; one that you can implement right away. Institute a no-shoe policy which will leave 90% of dust and dirt outside of the house.
