How to clean a cast iron skillet?
Cleaning Your Cast Iron Skillet
Step 1: As soon as you're done cooking, while the skillet is still warm, carefully remove excess food particles and grease. This helps prevent the buildup of stuck-on bits.
Step 2: Rinse the skillet using hot water and a soft sponge or a stiff brush. Avoid using harsh detergents or soap because they can strip away the seasoning—the protective layer that builds up over time.
Step 3: For stubborn residue, sprinkle some coarse salt into the skillet. The salt acts as a mild abrasive that helps scrub off food without harming the iron surface. Then, use a scrub brush or a paper towel dipped in water to work out the grime.
Step 4: Thoroughly dry the skillet after rinsing. It is very important to remove all moisture to prevent rust. You can do this by wiping it with a clean cloth or towel.
Step 5: Place the skillet on the stovetop over low heat for a few minutes to ensure that any remaining moisture evaporates completely.
Step 6: Once dry, apply a very thin layer of cooking oil (such as vegetable oil or another oil suitable for high temperatures). Use a paper towel to spread the oil evenly across the surface, both inside and out. This step renews the seasoning and helps maintain a natural non-stick layer.
Step 7: Let the skillet cool before putting it away, or if you prefer, you can heat it for a short period to let the oil fully bond. This keeps the iron protected and ready for your next cooking session.
