How to clean a dishwasher filter?

Steps to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter

  • Turn off the Dishwasher: Before starting, ensure the dishwasher is off and unplugged if possible. This helps prevent any accidents.
  • Locate and Remove the Filter: Open the dishwasher and find the filter at the bottom, usually behind a metal or plastic cover. Gently twist or lift it out as directed in the dishwasher manual.
  • Rinse Off Loose Debris: Rinse the filter under warm water to remove large food particles and debris. If there is a removable cover on the filter, take it off to clean it separately.
  • Soak the Filter: Fill a basin or sink with warm water and a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent. Place the filter in the water and let it soak for at least 10-15 minutes. This helps soften any stuck-on grime and grease.
  • Gently Brush the Filter: After soaking, use a soft brush or a toothbrush to gently scrub the filter. Focus on areas with stubborn residue. Avoid using abrasive materials that could damage the filter.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the filter again under warm water to remove any soap and loosened debris. Make sure there is no remaining residue.
  • Dry and Reinstall: Shake off excess water and allow the filter to air dry for a few minutes. Once dry, place the filter back in its original position securely.
  • Regular Maintenance: For optimal performance, clean the filter every couple of months or more frequently if you often have large food particles in your dishwasher. This keeps the dishwasher operating effectively and prevents build-up.
