How to Remove Tar from a Carpet

Tools:

- E-Cloth
- Ice (wrapped in a clean cloth)
- Mild dish detergent
- Warm water
- Clean, white cloth

Assess and Prepare

  • Identify the tar spot: Before you start, take a close look at the affected area. Tar is sticky and can be stubborn, so understanding its extent can help you choose the right approach.
  • Protect the surrounding carpet: Work from the outside toward the center. This prevents the tar from spreading further into untouched areas. If you can, gently place a piece of paper or a thin fabric barrier around the stain to catch any runoff.

Freeze the Tar

  • Cool it down: Tar becomes more brittle when it’s cold. Apply ice wrapped in a clean cloth to the tar for several minutes. This step hardens the tar, making it easier to lift without pushing it deeper into the fibers.
  • Avoid direct ice contact: If using ice cubes directly, keep them contained to prevent excess moisture on your carpet.

Gently Scrape Off Excess Tar

  • Use a dull edge: With a plastic spatula or a similar tool, gently scrape away as much tar as possible. Work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the carpet’s fibers.
  • Be patient: It may take several passes before you can lift off a significant portion of the tar. Patience here is key to avoid overworking the carpet.

Treat the Residual Tar

  • Apply a gentle solvent: Lightly dab a cleaning solution that is safe for carpets onto the remaining tar spot. Often, a mild dish detergent mixed with warm water works well. Use a cloth dampened—not soaked—with the solution, and gently blot the tar.
  • Let the solvent work: Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes to help break down the tar’s consistency. This step softens the residue so it lifts more easily.

Blot and Rinse

  • Gently blot: Using a clean, white cloth, push out the tar and cleaning solution. Avoid rubbing, as that could push the tar further in.
  • Rinse adequately: Dampen another cloth with plain water and blot the area to rinse out any leftover cleaning solution. This ensures you’re not leaving behind a soapy residue.

Repeat if Necessary and Dry

  • Repeat steps: If the stain persists, repeat the solvent treatment and blotting until you see significant improvement.
  • Allow it to dry: Once satisfied, press dry towels against the carpet to absorb excess moisture. Let the area air dry completely before walking on it.
